Monsters on the lawn
Fred. FRED! They're on the lawn again!
This illustration started as character design for dracula and just kept growing. I wanted to incorporate simple shapes for overall design such as triangle for Dracula, square for Frankenstein, and curves for the wicked witch. I really enjoyed the process of Van Gogh-ish style mark making though it's very labor intensive. Sometimes I forget how powerful simple mark making can be to define volume, texture and color.

Wooden Sparrow
This is my first attempt at wood sculpture so I tried to keep the design simple and fun. I made some sketches of birds from a visit to the Natural History Museum and wanted to keep the detail of the feathers simplified. I used bass wood from a local art store and bought some carving tools. I finished the sparrow with some dark wood stain and a few coats of polyurethane to give it the glossy finish. It was fun to get away from graphite and oils for a while and hopefully I will do more in the future :)
